Kinja'd!!!

Some people are fans of the Nissan GT-R. But many, many more people are NOT fans of the Nissan GT-R. This 2014 tongue-in-cheek car "review" is for those in the latter group.

This is part of an ongoing series of articles I will be writing using the formula laid out by Drew Magary on Deadspin.

Your Car: 2015 Nissan GT-R

Your 2015 Model Year Vital Stats : 545 Horsepower. 6-Speed Dual Clutch Flappy Paddle Transmission with Launch Control.* ATTESA E-TS, which sounds like a built in cappuccino maker, but is actually the name of the AWD system. The much more conventionally named Bilstein Damptronic suspension ensures a damp(end) driving experience at all times. These are both marketing terms that could have only come from Japan and Germany, the former being entirely convoluted beyond all recognition and the later incredulously dull. Regardless of the verbiage, using launch control will get you from 0-60 in 3.2 seconds*

* be warned using launch control to replicate the statistics used to sell you this damned car also causes your warranty to explode. Nissan's lawyers are laughing, if you aren't.

Your Engine: Nissan VR38DETT 3.8l V6

Rather than build a true supercar engine like a V8 or V12 for the GT-R Nissan decided to use a special evolution of their venerable VQ series V6. Each engine is hand-built by the dullest worker bee that Nissan can find. How is this possible in the land of Giant Anime Robots and Kanban mass production? It seems like a betrayal of Bushido Code to admit that Japanese mass production quality standards are not up to the rigors of building a supercar engine. Having written this truth, I fully expect the Yakuza to "remove" me in the middle of the night on orders from the Bond villain running Nissan, Carlo Ghosn. Tipping the scales at nearly 600 lbs the VR38DETT weighs almost 70lbs more than the 630 horsepower GM LS9. Makes you wonder if they should have gone the distance for a bespoke supercar motor instead of fluffing up the V6 found in a Nissan Quest Minivan.

Your Aesthetics Recipe: In a shot glass mix equal parts Gundam Fighter, Nissan Altima Coupe, and Sony Playstation 3. In a separate pint glass fill the glass to the height of the shot glass with sake, add a couple of drops of fanboy blood for color. Garnish with a face only a mother could love. Hold the shot glass above the pint, then it's Ichi… Ni… San… GT-R bomb time.

What's new that sucks: Not much except the price tag. Each year the GT-R gets marginally better while price keeps climbing. What started as a $70,000 world-beating-bargain (so long as you didn't use the launch control) has turned into a marginally better, just as ugly $100,000 annual science experiment to wring .05% more out of the platform while increasing the price 10%

What has always sucked: It's a pig. The GT-R was born atop the ugly tree. It's immense weight broke the bough which supported it's nest and it hit every branch on the way down. The GTR is 300-700lbs heavier than its "true supercar" competitors. The Nissan design chief said that the the GTR was styled after a Gundam fighter to help reflect Japanese culture. Anime story arcs are less complex than this car is ugly.

What might not suck: In this world there are thousands of fanboys who fetishize sleek turbocharged Japanese coupes like the Mazda RX-7 and Toyota Supra much the same way that the rest of the world's men have fetishized thin, demure, Japanese women. The GT-R is then by comparison the nerdy, chubby half Japanese\half French women's studies/engineering major at the local college house party. Sure she might not fit society's bullshit concept of beauty, but if the fanboy elitists just had an open mind, they would have found a new standard, one not based on appearance, instead on performance, substance and intellect. A standard upon which to judge all women, and by way of this metaphor, supercars. The Nissan GT-R also comes standard with the ability to make damn near anyone look like Sebastian Vettel on race track because it's that easy to drive staggeringly fast.

Share your opinions in the Comment Section Below . Remember, This is all in good fun.

Travis - King of Spun Bearings is not a king, author, journalist or even a part-time fanfic writer. Instead he spends his days driving his classic Chevrolet across SE-Michigan and his quiet nights at home drinking cheap whiskey and listening to Otis Redding. Occasionally he has a valid idea or opinion which he feels must be shared on the internet.

Excellent. I hate these andwanted to do a review like this but now I don't have to. But my writing for stuff like this lacks... prolific-ness. Point made? I think so.

Only other things I would have mentioned are the laughable ergonomics and how it is the worst car north of $30k to spend any amount of time inside of unless you are on a race track (even still you might fall asleep).

What always surprised me about the GT-R, was that one it's a Nissan, never saw a car like this coming, at least not since the cancellation of the Skyline. Second, just on looks it's not as loud or aggressive and crazy looking as say a Ferrari or Lambo, it's borderline sleeper based on styling.

I was a GTR hater; until yesterday. I am occasionally an instructor at a few local autocross clubs, and someone gave me the keys to their 2015 GTR. It only took one 79 second run to make me reconsider every opinion I had about the car. "It's all computers. The thing drives itself! It's boring!" Blah, blah, blah. I'm an idiot.

That is a challenging car to drive. It will spin all four tires pretty much on command. It will get sideways whenever you want it to. It will stop like you just hit a brick wall. When I got in, I tossed my hat in the backseat. The first time I tapped the brakes it went flying into the windshield.

10/10 would drive again.

I get beat up for this all the time but here goes.

They changed the name from Skyline to GT-R why I don't know, call a GT-R a Skyline and fan boys will crucify you faster than Jesus showing up to a bar mitzvah uninvited.

Maintenance cost is right up there with the likes of Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini. For a car that was considered the working mans super car it feels more like you must be a CEO to own this car.

Why do I have to spend 150K for a Nissimo GT-R.

If I am spending 150K on a car why does it have to share the same engine as a Nissan Quest I want a bespoke engine at least.

Lastly why are my posts pending what kind of bullshit is this. Before all this craziness my posts were not pending. Let me know which animal to sacrifice or which penis I have to stroke for this to go away. Seriously why am I getting punished.

Having driven one, on a track, I agree with everything. It's heavy and feels like it. It handles like it is glued to the ground, somehow, with magic wizardry or gnomes in the tires pushing real hard, or something, I'm not sure.

It goes like stink, will beat almost anything you can actually afford, but it's just not cool. It's ugly, heavy, the interior feels like you'd expect an expensive Nissan to, it's just kind of dead.

All that said, if I had to spend $100k on a car, this might be it. Although, they're basically giving Vipers away these days. And the new Z06 is coming. Although, everyone and their brother owns a Corvette. Hell, I'd probably get a used Ferrari with a gated shifter.

I'd say the GTR is probably my favourite car, maybe second to the R32, but I did enjoy the article.

One thing though, I don't see why people think its so ugly, because it doesn't look like a ferrari, or sleek, or anything? I love it's looks. It looks unique. I very rarely ever like supercars because they all have a similar shape and tend to get played out by celeberties or dude bros with lambo posters on their walls, I like the GTR because it doesn't look like a Ferrari, Audi R8 (which I think is incredibly boring design-wise), A Lambo. It looks more like a coupe of a sedan.

I wish it came in manual though, but I wouldn't say this car isn't Jalop. Atleast Nissan bothered making a car for the track, in 2008 when the GTR arrived, Toyota didnt have a track car really, neither did most other Japanese brands. Honda still doesn't (NSX doesn't count, its like the Half-Life 3 of cars).

There are only 3 crucial and essential things why the GTR sucks:

1. UGLY AS FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (!!!!!)

2. It doesn't need a driver, everything is automatic, computer-controlled bullshit for drivers who can't drive. Grandma's car

3.No manual gearbox. A CAR WITH AN AUTOMATIC transmission just isn't a PROPER DRIVERS CAR, PERIOD.

In other words, for the price of a new Miata you can add 4 Miata worth of power to your GTR. And let's not get into the 1800HP versions of this thing.

New turbos and fuel system=/= " only intake, exhaust and ECU "

And frankly my dear, I don't give a damn. Numbers aren't impressive. This thing has the aesthetic value of a cinderblock. If I wanted to chase numbers I'd much rather tune a 997 Turbo for similar overall price

It's like that because it's also a racist joke saying that Mexicans can't count, and/or bean counters or something. Maybe.

Funny you would use that car as comparison. Yes it did end up with a turbo v6, but the car was designed from the beginning to house a beautiful Jag v12. Last minute changes resulted in the v6 engine being used to MUCH disgust (i.e. Lawsuits). The majority of the deposited pre-orders chose to not even use their purchase option because without the v12 the car lost much of it's soul. Which is partly why it sold so poorly. By many people's standards that change took away the "true" supercar moniker at the time. It's still a sexy beast either way.

They don't replace the turbos, just the turbine wheel with a Billet one. And yes, turbos are part of the intake.

Their 997 package actually does include completely new turbos, and for some strange reason doesn't go up to 1800HP despite the years of development that company has been putting into the 997.

My point is that there's something to be said about extreme over-engineering that puts the engine in a class above most supercar engines. The Ford GT and Dodge Viper are both great examples of that. Just because you don't like the cars, doesn't mean you can't respect the engineering accomplishment.

You could argue it's a shame that such a good engine is in such a "heavy, ugly" car too.

It doesn't suck because the VR38 is a testament to Japanese, overbuilt, perfection. It's akin to the old RB engines and 2JZ, ridiculously overbuilt and thoroughly engineered to make good, reliable power.

It doesn't suck for this reason, but the main reason why this car is quick on a track is it has a full underbody and diffuser. It's good, but it makes comparing other cars to it on a track somewhat pointless.

Road and Track had Rod Millen test it alongside a Corvette and a 911. In the slow corners they were all even; in the fast corners (above 80 mph) the GT-R was 10+ mph faster. Why? Downforce. Tack a decent wing and splitter on the others and the GT-R would be left behind.

Nope. The Cayman/Cayman S just screams "I couldn't afford a 911", said every 911 owner ever.

The Cayman is an awesome car but it lacks the excitement of the 911. It's probably the "better" chassis but nowhere near as fun or unique of an experience.

I hate to spoil a future article but, a couple of reasons the 911 sucks:

-Nobody thinks it's cool. Seriously. Everyone just thinks you're a 50 year old dentist with a trophy wife. My wife even started calling me a douche when I started driving it. Doug complains about his Ferrari....he should seriously see how depressing it is to drive around a 911.

-It has a backseat. For no reason. Nobody would every want to be in that backseat

If the VR38DETT is a testament to Japanese, overbuilt, perfection, then the Early AWD boxes used that were puking when the GT-R was used like a race car is a testament to Japanese command structure, obsession with technical specs instead of real world results and complete denial when something fails.

I like the looks of the GT-R ...it does not look good in photos, but in person, the proportions are very good. ...also, I would hazard to say that most who do not like one has not driven one. I am a fan of lightweight cars (and race a couple of different sub 1500lb cars and sub 2000lb cars) ...but the GT-R is great fun to drive. It does not feel heavy and reponds well...also very controllable for such a fast car. Still an amazing value for what you get.
